The Flash Is Gearing Up For Its Fourth Season: Here’s What We Know So Far

With the fourth season of The Flash preparing to launch, I am now painfully aware that I am behind on episodes of Arrow; especially after seeing the trailer for the upcoming season.

But in recent weeks, a lot of information has been coming out about the new season and honestly, I couldn’t be more excited. I just hope the show loses its doom and gloom this upcoming season.

Please, could we have more of season 1 Flash and less of season 3 Flash? Thank you. Sincerely, The Brown Eyed Raven.

One thing I definitely missed in the third season of the show was its lack of episode-to-episode case of the week. I love the villain of the week format and I hope they bring it back to some degree.

A lot of fans were bummed with season 3’s story line because it focused too much on saving Iris West – a character, that wasn’t quite popular with the fans. If this level of devotion was dedicated to saving a fan favourite like…Cisco Ramon – I’m sure people would not have complained too much.

Well, all that is behind us now. Here’s what we know to expect from the 4th season of The Flash

Barry won’t remain trapped in the speed force for long.

We remember Barry sacrificed himself at the end of the third season to stabilize the speed force and stop it from destroying Central City – Barry, ever the Hero, but you can’t say it wasn’t deserved though. Barry has played with the timeline way too much and there needed to be consequences for his actions. The series picks up six months after the events of the season three finale and undoubtedly, Barry’s friends will find a way to save him from the speed force. However, his time in the speed force will probably feel longer since time moves differently in there. His time in the speed force will make also Barry wiser and more lighthearted, according to Grant Gustin (who plays The Flash). There’s no doubt this will affect him significantly though.

Sadly, Julian Albert will not be returning as a regular character.

??? I like Tom Felton so I’m definitely sad that he won’t be returning to our screens week after week. We saw Julian grow from being Barry’s annoying coworker to Savitar’s unwitting lackey, to Caitlin’s bae (which was unfortunately shortlived) and now he’s gone. Kinda.

Tom Felton will still be returning to the show but only as a guest star/recurring character – so at least, that’s something

Iris is in charge

Yeah, you read that right. In Barry’s absence, Iris has had to step up to the plate. Candice Patton who plays Iris West had this to say about the development:

You know, we left off Season 3 with Barry disappearing into the Speed Force and one of the last things he said to Iris was, ‘Keep running. Keep moving forward.’ And that’s kind of how she starts to deal with him being gone. She chooses to suppress all those feelings and step up as team leader, because Barry’s gone. I think it’s a role that suits her really well, but I think she’s also doing it to kind of deflect from how she’s really feeling.

A Non-Speedster Villain

Interesting.

I’m actually curious to see how the Flash will do when he is not going up against another speedster. The big bad this new season will be ‘The Thinker’. The Thinker mantle has been held by at least four different characters in the DC Universe but it is largely believed that Clifford Devoe will be the one who will appear on the show.

In the comics:

Clifford DeVoe was a failed lawyer who bitterly ended his career in 1933. Realizing that many of the criminals he had encountered had the skills but not the brains to rule Gotham City’s underworld, he started a new career as the brain behind small-time villains.

But the show probably won’t follow this route considering it has nothing to do with Gotham. Maybe he moved from Gotham to Central City. Yeah, right. We know his origin story will be retconned to fit into the show though – it’s just a question of how.

Guest Stars

This season of the Flash has some pretty interesting characters lined up – Sugar Lyn Beard will be playing Rebecca Sharpe, also known as Hazard.

She has been described as:

“Perpetually down-on her luck and is convinced her life is cursed — until a freak accident changes everything. With the universe on her side, she poses a threat to both Team Flash and Central City.

Hartley Sawyer will be playing Ralphy Dibny, also known as The Elongated Man – who I am oddly and unexplainably too excited to see.

Described as one of the Flash’s most iconic allies, Ralph Dibny—a.k.a. The Elongated Man—is a fast-talking private investigator with investigative skills that rival those of Batman. Upon discovering he has the power to stretch his body to any shape or form, Dibny uses his new abilities to help Team Flash solve one of Central City’s greatest mysteries.

Danny Trejo will be guest starring as Breacher, Gypsy’s father who is also a bounty hunter.

Neil Sandilands has been cast as this season’s big bad – The Thinker, who Barry battles through out the season. He is referred to as the “fastest mind alive”. Kim Engelbrecht will play The Mechanic, an engineer and The Thinker’s right hand who creates devices for him.

Well, that’s that – or at least what I know so far.

The Flash is returning on the 10th of October 2017; until then, here’s a trailer for the upcoming season…
